Kerta Gosha is the ancient house of justice located in the center of Klungkung city which also known as floating pavilion. Klungkung was one the capital city of Balinese kingdom after 1550 following the retirement of Balinese famous king Dalem Waturenggong. The city of Klungkung is 47 km from Denpasar, or 62 kms from Kuta, and 76 kms from Nusa Dua area.

“It’s like visiting a cemetery,” said a young girl watching the sunset from the park, which sits on a hill south of Denpasar.

The beautiful and serene park, overlooking Jimbaran Bay, was originally meant to be the best cultural park in Indonesia, and maybe, one day, the world.

But now it is just another remnant of the New Order regime, part of an ambition to build world-class landmarks to compete with iconic structures like the Statue of Liberty in New York.

Under the auspices of Soeharto, local artist I Nyoman Nuarta was commissioned to create a huge statue of Wisnu, the god of creation, sitting on Garuda, the mythical bird that carries him, with a final height greater than that of the Statue of Liberty.

The park was also to be equipped with a performance center with 7,500 seats, and ampitheather, a street theater, galleries, restaurants and other artistic attractions.

Problems began to emerge almost as soon as construction started in 1997, with the budget ballooning to hundreds of billions of rupiah.

It was to be built in the rocky and hilly area of Jimbaran, which present new logistical problems. The hills had to be cut flat to create the area required for the statue, which is still not finished today. Only the head and torso of Wisnu have been completed

Land clearing was also an early problem. A 250-hectare plot of land, 100 hectares of which belonged to Badung regency, and the rest to residents, was required. Ten years later, there are still disputes over the matter

During the Galungan festival the Hindu people of Bali usually perform a ceremony called Ngelawang which involves travelling around the village in the costume of Barong Rangda and Barong Kedengkling.

The Ngelawang Galungan ceremony is full of performances that convey holy values and is meant to create prosperity and health. A series of dances are performed, such as the Janger, the Joged, and the Arja. After the performance people make a canang sari offering which contains some money (sesari, canang beras jinah).

Lontar Barong Swari describes how the goddess Uma was cursed by Bhatara Guru and sent down into the world as the goddess Durga to disturb the affairs of mankind by creating disaster and plagues. When Durga practised Yoga facing the north, she caused gering lumintu; facing the west she caused gering hamancuh; facing the south she caused gering rug bhuana; and facing the east she caused gering ngutah bayar.

The unstable situation that Durga created in the world made the gods worried and anxious. They were afraid that heaven would also eventually be disturbed, so Sang Hyang Tri Murti (the Balinese Hindu trinity) descended to the earth to help mankind. Brahma manifested himself as Topeng Bang, Wisnu as Telek, and Siwa as Barong. These three gods eradicated the plagues by dancing from door to door. Any Hindu who desires protection from these three gods should conduct the Ngelawang ceremony and make an canang sari offering that contains money (canang beras jinah) in order to receive their blessing.

Ngelawang therefore is not just entertainment for the Balinese Hindu, but above all a spiritual performance to obtain protection, prosperity and health.

Balinese Hindu’s will celebrate yet another religious day known as Kuningan . This ceremonial occasion falls exactly 10 days after the Galungan rituals and is a time to commemorate ancestral spirits as they return to heaven after dwelling on earth for an extended period.

Worshippers express their gratitude through prayer and offerings to the trinity of Gods for the ultimate gift of life. At Kuningan the arched bamboo poles referred to as as penjor, which are erected in front of each Balinese home compound during the religious festivities, are redecorated. White cloth is replaced with yellow cloth at the base of the penjor’s temporary shrine as an indication of prosperity. All ceremonial tokens of appreciation must be performed before 12 noon to farewell the spirits as they depart the physical world and disappear into the unseen.

Celebrated with rituals and festivities, it is the time to rejoice in the trumph of virtue ( Dharma ) over evil ( Adharma ). Galungan Day is celebrated every Budha Kliwon Dungulan. Galungan Day has a meaning "Pawedalan Jagat" or the earth's celebration. On this day the Hindus thank the God for the creation of the earth and its content. On this day the Hindus feel grateful for His blessings.

Penjor Penjor is the symbol of Mount Agung and also the symbol of the presence of the God. It is made from a long bamboo pole with its curved end, and decorated with rice paddies, corn on the cob, coconut, cakes, a piece of white or yellow cloth, etc. This as a sign for reminding the human that everything we enjoy in this world is from the God.
Penjor is usually made on Penampahan Galungan (a day before the Galungan Day). It is the symbol of Mount Agung, and also as gratitude for the agricultural produce. Mount Agung is the symbol of holiness as a connection to Mount Semeru, Mount Himalaya, or Mahameru, which is believed as the place where Bhatara Putra Jaya stays.
We can be happy and celebrate for everything that we enjoy. But, the celebration must be based on dharma or holy bible. Happiness must always tend to the limits of ethics, such as holding art performance, literature night, or sport activities, etc.

In front of the Ubud palace, there is a well-known warung babi guling which is always packed with people every day until early afternoon. tour guides, drivers, domestic and foreign tourists can be withnessed sitting down crossed-leg having crispy and spicy sukling pig here.

The history of this temple is closely associated with the beginning of the rajadom of mengwi, in 1627 BC It was built in 1634 AD, at the time at the rule of the first Raja of mengwi. I Gusti Agung Ngurah Made Agung, who later become know as Ida Cokorda Sakti Belambangan.

As the royal Family temple of the Raja of mengwi, this temple is a place to worship the Royal ancestors, who fine their rest in a special shrine know as the “ Gedong Paibon “. Following the pattern of most Balinese temples, Pura Taman Ayun has three connecting temple yards. The innermost sanctum is know as “ Utama Mandala “ ( the highest circle ), The middle yards as “ Madia Mandala “ ( the circle in between ) and the outer as “ Nista Mandala “ ( The Humblest circle ). The enter the main sanctum one must pass through a raised gate way, known as the Kori Agung ( Paduraksa ), and the gate way between the outer and middle connect in a split gate, known as “ candi bentar “.
Apart from the “ Gedong Paibon “ dedicated to one ancestor, in the middle courtyard are other shrines dedicated to the various main temple of Bali. These shrines were built by the Raja to ensure that his kingdom and people would be able to share in the prosperity and pertility of the nation, and also toenable all the people at mengwi, to conduct the religious ceremonies at the temple, such as “ meajar-ajar “, memendak sang pitara “ and to request holy water to protect the rice fields from pestilence, etc.
There is also another shrine on the middle courtyard dedicated to the “ pasek Badak “ a famous here of by gone days from the Raja’s troops. The extensive temple grounds of Taman Ayun also function as a resting place for the royal family. Covering 4 heetares of land, the temple is surrounded by a large most, which used to be full of lotus and lily flowers of all colours, and around the edges of the moat can be found frangipani, cempaka, kenanga and other farfumed flowering trees, as well as mangostein durian, mango and rambutan fruit trees.

The temple has always been strongly influenced by the ups and downs at the Rajadom of mengwi. In 1890 here was a war between the rajas of Badung and mengwi, and the 10 th. Raja mengwi “ I Gusti Made Agung “ lost the bettle, and had to restreat to escape with life in to the bordering eastern district. During the rule of the victorious Raja of baung the temple was never looked after properly, and the temple buildings deteriorated due to lack of care.

In year 1911 AD, part of the Royal Family returned to their family seat at mengwi, and Pura Taman Ayun was restored. However on 20 th. January 1917 a violent eart-guake damaged many of the existing buildings. Repairs have been done in stages to return the temple to its original condition.
The Odalan at Pura Taman Ayun falls every 210 days on a day know as “ selasa Kliwon Wuku Medangsia “. Many tourists used to visit the temple. Oven before the second world war the family of Puri Gede Mengwi still mountain the temple, assisted by a committee made up of the local traditional leaders, such as the village officials from the mengwi district.

The town of Ubud (north of Denpasar), with its art market, museums and galleries, is arguably the cultural center of Bali island. There are major coastal roads and roads that cross the island mainly north-south. Due to the mountainous terrain in the island's center, the island roads tend to follow the crests of the ridges across the mountains. There are no railway lines. The island is surrounded by coral reefs. Beaches in the south tend to have white sand while those in the north and west black sand. The beach town of Padangbai in the south east has both: the main beach and the secret beach have white sand and the south beach and the blue lagoon have much darker sand. Pasut Beach, near Ho River and Pura Segara, is a quiet beach 14 km southwest of Tabanan. The Ho River is navigable by small sampan. Black sand beaches between Pasut and Klating dukuh are being developed for tourism, but apart from the seaside temple of Tanah Lot, this is not yet a tourist area.

Bali island has been inhabited since early prehistoric times firstly by descendants of a prehistoric race who migrated through mainland Asia to the Indonesian archipelago, thought to have first settled in Bali around 3000 BC. Stone tools dating from this time have been found near the village of Cekik in the island's west.
The end of the prehistoric period in Indonesia was marked by the arrival of Hindu people from India around 100 BC as determined by Brahmi inscriptions on potsherds. The name Balidwipa has been discovered from various inscriptions, including the Blanjong charter issued by Sri Kesari Warmadewa in 913 AD and mentioning Walidwipa. It was during this time that the complex irrigation system subak was developed to grow rice. Some religious and cultural traditions still in existence today can be traced back to this period. The Hindu Majapahit Empire (1293–1520 AD) on eastern Java founded a Balinese colony in 1343. When the empire declined, there was an exodus of intellectuals, artists, priests and musicians from Java to Bali in the 15th century.
The First European contact with Bali island is thought to have been when Dutch explorer Cornelis de Houtman arrived in 1597, though a Portuguese ship had foundered off the coast of Bukit as early as 1585.] Dutch rule over Bali came later, was more aggressively fought for, and they were never ultimately able to establish themselves as they had in other parts of Indonesia such as Java and Maluku. In the 1840s, a presence in Bali island was established, firstly in the island's north, by playing off various distrustful Balinese realms against each other. The Dutch mounted large naval and ground assaults first against the Sanur region and then Denpasar. The Balinese were hopelessly overwhelmed in number and armament, but rather than face the humiliation of surrender, they mounted a final defensive but suicidal assault, or puputan. Despite Dutch pleas for surrender, an estimated 4,000 Balinese marched to their death against the invaders. Afterwards the Dutch governors exercised little influence over the island, generally allowing local control over religion and culture to remain intact.
Japan occupied Bali during World War II during which time a Balinese military officer, Gusti Ngurah Rai, formed a Balinese 'freedom army'. Following Japan's Pacific surrender in August 1945, the Dutch promptly returned to Indonesia, including Bali island, immediately to reinstate their pre-war colonial administration. This was resisted by the Balinese rebels now using Japanese weapons.
On 20 November 1946, the Battle of Marga was fought in Tabanan in central Bali. Colonel I Gusti Ngurah Rai, 29 years old, finally rallied his forces in east Bali at Marga Rana, where they made a suicide attack on the heavily armed Dutch. The Balinese battalion was entirely wiped out, breaking the last thread of Balinese military resistance. In 1946 the Dutch constituted Bali as one of the 13 administrative districts of the newly-proclaimed Republic of East Indonesia, a rival state to the Republic of Indonesia which was proclaimed and headed by Sukarno and Hatta. Bali island was included in the ‘’Republic of the United States of Indonesia’’ when the Netherlands recognised Indonesian independence on Dec. 29, 1949. In 1956 Bali officially renounced the Dutch union and legally became a province within the Republic of Indonesia.
The 1963 eruption of Mount Agung killed thousands, created economic havoc and forced many displaced Balinese to be transmigrated to other parts of Indonesia.
In 1965, after a failed coup d'etat in Jakarta against the national government of Indonesia, Bali, along with other regions of Indonesia most notably Java, was the scene of widespread killings of (often falsely-accused) members and sympathizers of the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI) by right-wing General Soeharto-sponsored militias. Possibly more than 100,000 Balinese were killed although the exact numbers are unknown to date and the events remain legally unclosed.Many unmarked but well known mass graves of victims are located around the island.
On October 12, 2002, a car bomb attack in the tourist resort of Kuta killed 202 people, largely foreign tourists and injured a further 209. Further bombings occurred three years later in Kuta and nearby Jimbaran Bay.

Barong and kris dance Barong Dance which is more drama than dance. ' lord of the forest' and magical protector of balinese villages, the barong is a mythical, shaggy half-dog, half-lion creature, with a long mane, fantastic fangs, and bulging eyes. It is propelled by two men who maneuver the costume with whimsical and mischievous movements to expres its fun-loving nature. his opponent is rangda, the evil witch who rules over the spirits of darkness.
The barong dance epitomizes the eternal struggle between good and evil. The barong will snap its jaws at the gamelan, prance around a bit, and enjoy the acclaim of its supporters- a group of kris wielding men. Then the ferocious rangda will appear lolling her long tongue, baring her treatening fangs, her neck draped with human entrails, not a beautifull sight, but of course an unforgettable one.

Legong dance
The most gracefull of Balinese dances, Legong is the epitome of classical balinese female dancing. A legong, as the dancer is known, is often a young girl, eight or nine years of age, reraly older than early teens. it was first created in the 18th century and is usully the first dance to be tought to beginners.

Kecak dance
Kecak dance which illustrates the story of rama and sinta taken from the ramayana epic against a background of about 150 chanting men. its name derived from the sound " cak " which is chanted in complex interlocking patterns that are like the rhythmic patterns played on the gamelan.

Otzi the Iceman, dating from the fourth to fifth millennium BC, was found in the Ötz valley in the Alps and had approximately 57 carbon tattoos consisting of simple dots and lines on his lower spine, behind his left knee, and on his right ankle. The largest lake overshadowed by the active volcano is located in Bangli Regency, at the northeast of Bali. Batur Lake is the widest lake in this island. It lies down in the feet of Mount Batur and Mount Abang. The lake is classified as a "neutral-dilute" lake because there is no known underlying hydrothermal activity, and the abundant rainfall more than quenches any such activity. There is a hot spring right by the lake. We can enjoy the spectacular scenery of Batur Lake from Kintamani. Across the lake, only reachable by boat, lies Trunyan village, where the Bali Aga people live. The surrounding of the lake is a favorite place for picks self up. At Batur Lake we can see the scenic view and feel cool atmosphere. Bangli's mountainous region center is around the spectacular volcanic crater (or caldera) of Batur. Mount Batur adjacent to the volcano is the large crescent-shaped Batur Lake, all surrounded by the high walls of the crater rim. The place is a great day trips, trekking or just to get away from the daily activity.

There is no doubt that Jatiluwih is among the most beautiful places and can offer some of the best scenery on the entire island of Bali. The place has a particular charm even if the weather, which can change dramatically within minutes, is rainy and cloudy. Everywhere you look you see green rice fields and rice terraces, combined with high mountains and forests. On clear days you may see large parts of southern Bali.
Jatiluwih is located in the Tabanan district, about 20 km north of Tabanan city. The village sits on an altitude of 850 meters, the air is relatively cold and fresh. The last part of the road can best be described as rough, narrow and full of holes. Pass the small village and pay the fee to enter the area, then continue to Cafe' Jatiluwih about one km further along the road, don't forget to stop and take photos on the way. At the Cafe' you can have lunch while you enjoy the lovely view. The best chances to have clear weather is early in the morning
Almost everyone up here are involved in agriculture, mainly growing of rice. Many of the old traditions are still maintained, even today you can see a farmer plowing his fields with water buffaloes.
A trip to Jatiluwih can be combined with a visit to Gunung Batukau and the Pura Luhur Batukau temple at the foot of this mountain, you can also make a stop at the hot springs at Yeh Panes along the road to Batukau.

Description

According to the history, there was a Kingdom named "Penulisan" with the King named Jaya Wikrama who was suffering from a serious skin disease.

Upon the suggestion of the minister Satya Wacana the King was then taken to a traditional healer named Ki Dukuh Tangkas at a village of Lampah at the northern part of Rajeg Uru forest (now known as "Jegu" village) by Ho River.

On the way to Lampah Village, the King was tempted by a monkey at Rajeg Uru forest later known as beloved pet of the traditional healer, Ki Dukuh Tangkas.

When Ki Dukuh Tangkas knew the purpose of the King's visit, he then taught the King a healing teaching called: "Usadha Bhakti" through a meditation system.

One day, when the King and Ki Dukuh Tangkas practiced the teaching by doing meditation, by God's Blessing a hot spring out-poured from the ground.

Ki Dukuh asked the King to take bath every "Kajeng Kliwon" (a Balinese point of time) until the King completely recovered. To express his gratefulness, the King then built a temple on that location called: "We Brahma" or "Toya Anget" Temple.
